The early bird catches the camera broth?

Let's take a really early look at what's moving on up in camera and photo sales at Amazon! And we start with some light, before the first light: The Quantaray - MS-1 Wireless Flash Booster / Slave is offered by RitzCameras for just $20 each.

Our first giant bundle from Cameta Cameras is a $600 DSLR kit which includes: Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera + Nikon 18-55mm AF-S Lens Outfit + Nikon 55-200mm ED AF-S Lens + Nikon SLR Gadget Bag + Transcend 2GB 150x SecureDigital Card + USB Card Reader. Not bad! The same kit but with only one lens is available from $495 from the same retailer.

And those with Canon DSLRs get in line! There's a 1 to 2 month wait for the Canon EF-D Focusing Screen for Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR Camera. The price is $40.

$100 camera deal! That's how much the black Samsung S730 goes for. This is a 7mp, 3x optical, SD, AA digicam.

And now for a film SLR for $260 via J&R World: NIKON FM10 35mm Camera Kit. This is not just any film SLR, it's an old-school all-manual SLR!

And something totally new school in pre-order status for $200: The brand new VR-based kit lens: Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens. Yes, a $200 VR lens. What it took to create it? DSLRs with sensor shift stabilization and the proliferation of IS in non-DSLR digital cameras!

If you love xD cards, $129 is what you pay Beach Cameras to get the Fuji Z5fd. This uses xD memory cards only and has a smallish SuperCCD sensor (1/2.5"). A more modern version is the Fuji Z100fd at around $150. This does take xD but also SD memory cards.

At the same price is the Olympus Stylus 760 thru J&R World, but as with most Olympus cameras, it insists on xD only. Oh that is such a 1999 mentality! Wake up Olympus and smell the SD/MMC roses! You are not Sony. You can't get away with it!

Meanwhile the Nikon D40X, body only, is offered at $546, sold and shipped by Amazon. Not a bad deal, unless you are planning to use old lenses with this. This DSLR (along with the D40) expect focusing motors on the lens (AF-S), so they have issues with older lenses without focusing motors. Oh Nikon, please don't do that again!

The lovely Nikon S51 is offered at $195 by Adorama, another competitor in the fashionable camera segment. This is offered in red (copper red? matte red? oh who cares!)

The Kodak Z885 is one of the few cameras that shows "megapixel restraint" as it offeres an 8mp 1/1.8" sensor. And offered at $142 via Beach Cameras. Not a perfect camera of course, but worth taking a look at!

The Panasonic FX33 is back to discounting! Now available at $240for the black model, sold and shipped by Amazon itself.

In a similar price segment, at $212, is the folded optics Pentax Z10, a 7x optical zoom Optio, related to the Casio EX-V series (two of them out).

And this concludes the early bird specials :)
