Camera specials at Staples during Father's Week

Father's day is an endless parade of gadgets which is great for fans of high tech gear sales!

Staples starts their 12-page ad of this week (June 8 to 14, 2008) with the Canon A580 on sale for $130. This is a very nice price and a solid camera for the price range. However, we think it's a better idea to get one of the Powershot A-series models with Image Stabilization (IS) if you have some flexibility in your budget. This means models like the A570-IS, A590-IS, A650-IS and A720-IS.

And having said all that, the Canon A590-IS is on sale for $160. Great price for brick and mortar! Good price alert!

IF you are a Sony Cybershot fan, then you might be interested in the Cybershot W150, an 8mp 1/2.5" digital camera with a 5x optical zoom lens going for $230. For almost half that price, you can get the Cybershot S730, Sony's entry-level point and shoot, currently at $120. Not a bad price for brick and mortar for sure. But you do have to pay more to "feed it" it memory sticks.

Kodak fans out there might be interested in the 12-megapixel Easyshare Z1285 going for $180. That's $15 per megapixel! Cheaper than gas per gallon almost :) If you prefer a smaller and more entry-level Kodak, the colorful M863 is yours for $130, and if you are lucky you may find it at the color of your choice.

Canon fans may be appalled by the horrible price of the Powershot SX100 IS. Staples is selling it at $250, while you can get it at Amazon for $220. Ouch! Meanwhile the Canon Digital Rebel XTi 400D can be yours for $700 and this includes the 18-55 EF-S kit lens. List price anyone? Do note that the newer XSi 450D model includes an IS version of the kit lens, but the previous Digital Rebels continue to be bundled with the kit lens they originally came with, the one without IS. As one would expect. Unless you are buying from a retailer that has created their own custom bundle and added the body only version of the D-Rebel with the 18-55 EF-S IS. But there are no incentives to do this, so you may not see this by many retailers.

Memory Cards and Accessories
Some of the digital camera purchases mentioned above qualify for a free-after-rebate Canon ip3500 photo printer. Be sure to check the circular ad or your local store or the Staples website for more details.

Sing o/~ Memories o/~ as you shop for a 2gb Sandisk sD card for $18 (not a bad price, but not the best either), a 2gb Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme SD for $20. Also for $20 you can get the Ultra II Compact Flash from Sandisk, and the Extreme for $25.
A 7" Smartparts digital picture frame can be yours for just $60. If you prefer a larger one, say 11", also from SmartParts, the price jumps to $120.
