Canon G11 at $439: serious but not SLR-big

If you are looking for a serious digital camera, but do not want to go to the world of SLRs and lenses and hassle and high prices, then, one of your options - if not the only option - if the Canon G11 going for $439 with free S&H by Amazon.com.

This has a nice feature set, and is modest in the number of megapixels (ten), which is a plus these days. Obviously, you cannot expect this to outperform digital SLRs, since their sensors are much larger and they have more advanced electronics. But with this camera you get more convenience and flexibility at a much smaller package.

Fuji Finepix F70EXR for $199

If you are looking for a small compact camera but don't want to give up on zooming, then you may want to investigate the Fujifilm Finepix F70EXR offered by Amazon.com for $199 with free standard S&H.

The camera has a 10-times optical zoom with stabilization, and also Fuji's own SuperCCD EXR sensor.

There are plenty of choices out there but look at the price - for the price of a typical compact camera with a 3-times or 4-times optical zoom, you can get one with a 10-times.

This should go without saying, but you can expect some compromises with this type of a design. It is simply illogical to expect this camera to perform like a $500+ advanced compact, or like one of those drooled-upon f2.8 SLR telephoto lenses.

Nikon Coolpix S1000pj (with built-in projector) for $360

If you are the Engadget-loving type, and hang out at Gimzodo a lot, and even visit Akihabara News in the middle of the night in the hopes of some exciting new gadgets from Japan, then you are probably the ideal candidate for the new Coolpix camera with the built-in projector, the Coolpix S1000pj.

The current price offered at Amazon.com is $360, and this include the usual free shipping from Amazon.

This is the only digital camera right now that has a built-in projector. Obviously, with the CES 2010 trade show coming up during the first week of January 2010, it is quite possible that other manufactures may follow suit, and come up with their own cameras with projection functionality.

But at least for now, the S1000pj is the only game in town...

Flip for these free accessories

If you flip for the Flip camcorder, then you will flip twice when you hear Amazon.com is offering two free accessories when you purchase one of the eligible Flip camcorder models.

There are three Flips to chose from, two UltraHD and one MinoHD, all 120 minutes in terms of storage. The accessory choices are nice too, you can pick two out of nine different ones!

But don't wait to make up your mind - this promotion ends at the close of business on Friday December 18, 2009.

Free 4gb memory card with Canon Powershots

Everybody likes free - free shipping and free 4gb Kingston SDHC memory cards is what Amazon.com is offering when you purchase select Canon Powershot digital cameras.

These are competitively priced cameras, it's not like they are clearing out old models. It includes hot cameras, like the compact S90, the superzoom SX20 IS, SX200 IS and SX120 IS, a number of the cutie Elphs (SD780, SD960, SD1200), and the AA-powered A1100 IS.

Great deal: Nikon L20 (red color) for just $81

It's hard to really ask for more for just $81. That is the price Amazon.com asks for the red Nikon Coolpix L20. This is not chopped meat - it is a camera with plenty of features considering the price, including a 3-inch LCD, face detection, 3.6 times optical zoom, 10 megapixel sensor. It takes AA batteries (rechargeables a good idea!), and the easy to find SD/SDHC/MMC cards in terms of storage.

But that's not all friends. They also offer a free one year subscription to Wired (the magazine), as well as a coupon for a free 12-month photo calendar from Shutterfly.

Those are the freebies, you also get an additional 40% off discount on the price of the DigiPower DPS 3000 charger and battery kit. This looks promising - it is a three hour charger and comes with four AA rechargeable nimh batteries. Its current price is $13, but if you buy it together with the L20, in the same order, both from Amazon.com of course, you can get it for 40% off $13 which roughly comes out to about $7.80. It even has a car charger!

All that for $81 :-) Grab yours now?

Panasonic LZ10K - get it for under $110

There are many digital cameras at around $100 these days. One of them is the more solid and less fashionable Panasonic Lumix LZ10-K, in black body color. You can have it delivered to you for $100 plus $9 shipping fee from J&R World at Amazon.com.

This solid camera has a ten megapixel sensor, with a five times optical-zoom lens, it takes SD/MMC memory cards and AA batteries which you can find easily anywhere in the world.

Better yet for those who want to slowly learn more about photography, it also features manual exposure control, along with shutter priority and aperture priority. This a good way to learn, although the effect of these controls are more pronounced on SLRs and DSLRs.

Fuji J28 with 2gb card and case for just $80

This is a nice bundled deal offered by the great Amazon.com. You can get the Fuji J28 Finepix with a bonus 2gb Fujifilm SD memory card and a Case Logic DCB-16 compact camera case for free. The price is $80 and it includes free shipping and handling.

This is a great price, since you get the memory card and the case which go for about $10 each. The camera has a ten megapixel sensor, and a three-times optical zoom lens. It takes lithium-ion re-chargable batteries (just like the ones in the cell-phones) and the common SD/MMC memory cards.

It's hard to find a better deal for $80!

Samsung SL30 for just $79

Where else are you going to find a P&S digital camera from a brand-name manufacturer with a 3-times optical zoom lens for $79? At Amazon.com, that's where. The camera in question is the Samsung SL30, in black body color, with a ten-megapixel sensor, a three-times optical zoom lens and a 2.5 inch LCD display. It also records 30fps video, takes the common SD/SDHC/MMC memory cards, and has the all-important face detection.

It goes without saying, you can't reasonably expect a $79 camera perform like a $500 digital SLR, so make sure you have the proper expectations if you are jumping in this deal.

You can find out more about it through the customer reviews published at the aforementioned page, and also by checking the various camera review websites (or use the search engines).

Canon SX200 IS can be yours for $292

Looking for a stylish super-zoom digital camera from Canon? How about the black black Canon SX20 IS offered for $292 with free shipping and handling by Amazon.com?

It has a 12-megapixel sensor with a 12 times optical zoom with of course image stabilization, and a 3 inch LCD display on the back. This has some versatility as the lens starts at 28mm wide. It takes the common SD/SDHC memory card and takes proprietary lithium-ion rechargeable batteries.

But that's not the only option. There are plenty of options at this price-range. However, many people prefer or at least trust the Canon name.

Two Tamron zoom lenses for $190

For Canon users looking for affordable zoom lenses for the film SLRs and digital SLRs, we have a special for you. For $190, you can have the Tamron 28-80mm and 75-300mm lenses. These are for the Canon EOS mount.

The lenses work on both SLRs and DSLRs, but please keep in mind that they are entry-level lenses, and considering the price, you can't expect them to perform the same way $1000 lenses do.

Casio EX-Z33 for $100 (multiple cameras)

If you are looking for a starter digital camera with a 3X zoom lens, one of the options is the Casio EX-Z33, available in multiple cool colours at Amazon.com.

It sports a ten megapixel sensor, a three-times optical zoom lens, a 2.5-inch display, face detection, movie recording in the 16:9 aspect ratio that matches your widescreen HDTVs, SD/SDHC memory cards, and proprietary re-chargeable lithium-ion battery (like the cell-phones).

Sony Cybershot W290 (silver) down to $176

Sony fanboys this is for you! If you are looking for a Cybershot camera that is above the entry-level but below $200, this may be of interest to you. The Sony W290 (silver) goes for $176 with free shipping and handling by the very profitable Amazon.com, who perhaps decided to share some of the profits by discounting cameras :) (NOT!)

The W290 has a five-times optical zoom that starts at the digital equivalent of 28mm wide-angle, and has the usual amenities you would expect from a 2009 model year camera.

But, as all cameras, it has its pros and cons, so be sure to check the internets for reviews by some of the well-known camera and technology review sites so you can get a good look at it before making the $purchase$ decision.

Fuji Finepix A170 yours for just $79

If you want to get a digital camera for less, say $79 with free shipping, then check out Amazon.com, where Amazon is offering the Fuji Finepix A170 for $79 with free shipping and handling.

This is not a bad price, considering the camera has a three times optical zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD display, a ten megapixel sensor, takes the common AA batteries and the common SD/SDHC memory cards, and even includes a coupon code for 55 free prints from Shutterfly.com.

As usual, we highly recommend using rechargeable AA batteries, not single-use, since they are better for your wallet, and also better for the environment. If you look around your house, you will notice a number of small devices are using AA batteries. Switching to rechargeables may have the hassle of re-charging, but you only pay for them once!

And if you are not draining them quickly, also be sure to consider batteries with low self-discharge rates, like the Sanyo Eneloop.

Casio EX-Z33BK (black) shipping for $100

Nothing like paying just $100 and getting a digital camera with a zoom lens. Especially if you were one of the early adopters of digital cameras and paid four figures for a camera with specs that were nowhere near as high as this camera! So, this very moment, Amazon.com is offering the black Casio EX-Z33 for $100 with free shipping.

But wait! There's more! (As they say in info-mercials). You also get fifty-five free prints from Shutterfly. You get a coupon code which you can redeem at your convenience for the fifty-five prints.

The camera has ten megapixels, and a three-times optical zoom lens, with a two-and-a-half inch LCD display. It takes the easy to find SD/sDHC/MMC memory cards and has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery like a cell-phone.

Hot for Sony fans: Cybershot W290 for $195

If you are into Sony cameras, and you are looking for a Cybershot point and shoot digital camera, then look no further than the black Sony W290, which has now dropped in price to $195 with free shipping and handling.

This is a nice price, it was selling for over $200 for most of the time! And as a bonus, this camera starts at wide angle, the digital equivalent of 28mm, which is a nice plus for group portraits and landscapes.

Of course don't expect to turn into the next Ansel Adams or Annie L just because it has wide-angle :-)

Canon Powershot E1 (blue) shipped for $140

If you are looking for a decently priced Canon Powershot camera that takes AA batteries, then head on over to Amazon.com, where they are offering the Canon E1 (blue) for $140 with free shipping. The order in this case is fulfilled by Amazon.com proper, while the seller is Pavilion Electronics.

Fufilled by Amazon is a low(er) risk way to buy items from third-party sellers, because you are dealing directly with Amazon.com, not with the third-party seller.

The camera, in a blue nutshell, has a ten megapixel sensor, a four times optical zoom lens, and the common SD/SDHC/MMC memory cards.

Sony Cybershot T90 (black) ships for $236

The black Sony Cybershot T90 has had another discount, you can now obtain it for $236 with free shipping and handling at Amazon.com, offered by the Great River herself.

This is a camera with a folded-optics lens, and has the style and pizazz of the Sony T-series of fashionable cameras.

But do keep in mind, this camera uses Memory-Stick memory-cards, not the standard SD/SDHC cards. So, if you don't already have MemorySticks, then you would need to buy at least one memory card!

Although it is always a good idea to have more than one memory-card, a minimum of two is a much better starting point!

Panasonic LZ10K for under $130

One of the very affordable options yet not a bad camera choice, is the Panasonic LZ10K, offered by different sellers at Amazon for under $130. The camera has a ten-megapixel sensor, with a 5X stabilized zoom lens, takes the easy to find AA batteries (re-chargeable or not), and the affordable SD, SDHC, MMC memory cards! There are 41 customer reviews of it over at the Amazon page, so check them out if you are not familiar with it.

Sony DPF-D70 yours for $70 (Monday deal only)

This deal is only good for today, Monday October 5, in the year of 2009, so don't delay, don't forget! Amazon.com is offering the Sony DPF-D70 digital picture frame for $70 with free shipping and handling as their featured Gold Box Deal of the Day! There is a limit of one digiframe per customer. No rebates to worry about!

This digiframe has a 800x480 resolution, with a 15:9 aspect ratio, a 7-inch LCD display, 256MB of internal memory, but also takes memory cards and USB B-type connectors. It can do various slide and shows and dog and pony shows with the pictures.

And don't be afraid that it can't read your high-megapixel shots - it can read files up to 100MB big and 48-megapixels long. Not that it would make sense to put a 20-megapixel file on a 800x480 digital picture frame, but I digress!

More details and close to 60 user-reviews can be found at the Amazon product page.

Samsung HZ15w yours for $265

If you are a fan of Samsung digital cameras, and are looking for a compact-sized super-zoom camera, you could be interested in the Samsung HZ15w, which currently goes for $265 at Amazon.com, with free shipping and handling!

It has a twelve-megapixel sensor with a ten-times optical zoom lens which bears the well-known name of Schneider. The camera has a 3-inch LCD display, and image stabilization. It has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and writes the images and movies on the SD/SDHC memory cards.

$99 camera - the Panasonc DMC-LZ8K

For the gadget freaks out there who love to use and re-use their re-chargeable AA-size batteries, we have a hot deal. For a mere $99, you can get the Panasonic DMC-LZ8K. This is sold by Beach-Cameras at Amazon.com. Free shipping and handling is included.

It has an eight-megapixel sensor with a five-times optical zoom lens with image stabilization, which Panasonic calls MegaOIS. It has a 2.5-inch LCD display, and its lens starts at 32mm wide. Not quite wide-wide, but wider than most compact digital camera out there.

It's really hard to get a better brand new-in-box digital camera for $99!

Fujifilm F70 discounted to $242

For those of you who have a special place in their photographic hearts for the Fujifilm Super-CCD sensors, we have some good news. The Finepix F70 EXR has dropped in price to $242, with the usual free Super Saver shipping offered by Amazon.com.

The camera started out at $280, so it's already a near-$40 discount. The camera features a 10x zoom lens but it has a rather slim profile, all things considered.

It is the first compact and slim zoom by Fuji in recent years. It uses a smaller SuperCCD sensor than what most of the other Fujifilm Finepix cameras use, so it may not provide the same level of benefits as it does on the 1/1.6" sensors.

Having said all these, a $242 price on a slim-zoom camera is certainly a nice price!

And as always, be sure to check sample pictures, user and professional reviews, and online forums for opinions and questions.

Sony Cybershot W290 reaches the $200 price range

Hey Sony fans, if you like your Cybershots, and you like wide-angle photography with the compact digital cameras, you can get the 2009-model Cybershot W290, in your choice of color, for around $200 at Amazon.

This is the Amazon-proper price, but if you want to buy from one of their third-party sellers, you can save even more. But be careful with third-party sellers. Only buy from names you know and trust. If it's a seller you don't know of, make sure you first spend some time doing some research and such.

Especially if the price is lower than everybody else. That is of course not to say not to trust every third-party seller, but just like on eBay, exercise caution!

Fuji Finepix A170 for just $84 (free shipping, bonus book!)

If you are the thrifty type of buyer, we have something that might get you excited. For just $84, with free shipping included, you can get the Fuji Finepix A170. And as a bonus, you also receive a code that gets you a free 7x9 inch photo-book courtesy of Shutterfly. A $20 value they say.

Regardless of the free photo-book promo, paying $84 for a ten-megapixel camera, with a three-times optical zoom lens, and AA batteries is not. Unlike some of the older Fuji digital cameras, the newer models accept the SD and SDHC memory cards, which are the most affordable and more commonly used. So you are also getting the most thrifty combination of batteries and memory cards.

Because, unlike proprietary batteries, you can always buy AA batteries, be they alkaline, lithium or rechargeable. We do recommend rechargeable, because you can recharge them many many times, and you can use them in all sorts of other gadgets, not just this camera. More earth-friendly!

Sony Cybershot W180 for $130

Hello Sony fans! If you are interested in the Cybershot W180, the silver model is offered by Amazon.com for $130. Free shipping and handling as usual with their Super Saving shipping. This is a ten megapixel camera, with a three-times optical zoom lens.

Please keep in mind, it takes Sony's own memory card format, the Memory Sticks, and it does not take the more common SD and SDHC memory cards.

The $130 price is for the silver model. The other two colors are going for a little bit more.

Considering where cameras and camera prices were a few years ago, it is amazing that for just $130 you can get such a camera!

Domke F-8 small shoulder bag (shipped for $61)

One such good bag is the Domke F-8 small shoulder bag offered by Adorama.com for $61, and with free shipping and handling.

There are no rebates to submit. What you pay is what you pay!

This bag is designed for 1 to 2 cameras, with two to four lenses, and the other usual accessories. It has eight compartments and it is of durable water-resistant breathable cotton canvas.

The Z20fd is a basic point and shoot compact digital camera, with a decent ten megapixels and a three times optical zoom that is built-in the camera body (folded-optics). The cover slides over the lens to protect when you turn off the camera.

Other features include face-detection, a 2.5 inch display, support of SD/SDHC (but also xD) memory cards, and a stylish eye-catching look. More so accenuated by the ice blue color of this particular model.

Olympus E-520 DSLR and two lenses for $540

If you have been looking for a way to get into Four Thirds without spending a fortunte, we have a great idea for you - the Olympus E-520 with two lenses for $540 with free shipping and handling. This is offered by 17th Street at Amazon.com.

This is a nice price, the two lenses you are getting are the standard two lenses that come in the kit, the 14-42mm and 40-150mm. Both are Four Thirds lenses, so you have to do the "times two" math to get the focal-range in terms of the 35mm world. So, basically, these would be 28-84mm and 80-300mm.

The E-520 has sensor-shift image stabilization, so just about any lens you attach to it, will give you the benefit of image stabilization. This usually a few stops of a light advantage in situations where stabilization can help. It's not a miracle cure, and you still need a tripod for certain situations. And no, it can't perform miracles. But it can certainly help you get a shot that otherwise may have been impossible!

Samsung SL30 (black) for a mere $89

If you are looking for an affordable sub-$100 digicam and you are a Samsung fanboy of sorts that likes everything to be Samsung, well, just set aside $89 from your credit card budget and grab the P&S Samsung SL30 for just $89 with free shipping and handling. This price is at Amazon, and you can chose from which famous third-party seller you can get it from. That way you can pick it up from one that is closer to you, so shipping will be faster :)

This is the deal of the day at J&R World, so don't sleep on it if you are interested! And the price is screaming "buy me". For just $15, with free shipping thrown in, you can get the refurbished GiiNii 5-inch digital picture frame, model SH-501.

This has a 4:3 aspect ratio, with 480 x 234 Resolution, a 5-in-1 memory-card reader, a USB port, and with brown and black elastic frames. Also has calendar and clocking functionality, but there is no internal memory on it. You have to use a memory card or the USB port!

Samsung L200 (silver) going for $109

Looking for the boxy little Samsung L200? You found it friends! For $109, with free shipping and handling, you can get it from Beach Camera at Amazon. This is a brand new in box camera, not used or refurbished!

It has a modest ten megapixels with a three-times optical zoom lens, face detection, takes SD/SHDC memory cards, and has a 2.5-inch display.

Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR for $170

Nikon users looking for an affordable compact telephoto lens may be interested in taking look at what Adorama.com has to offer - the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR for $170 with free shipping and handling. This is a lens exclusively for digital SLRs with the smaller sensors (DX) and in terms of 35mm focal ranges, it gives the effect of somewhere along the lines of 80-300mm.

This is because of the Field Of View crop, the lens itself does not magically change focal lenghts. It's just that the image falls on a smaller "film area" (in this case the sensor) so it "looks bigger". Or something like that!

Canon G10 gets reasonable price again

If you want to get the Canon G10 at a reasonable price, well, you may want to ponder $457, which includes free shipping and handling. That is the price right now at Amazon.com, and it comes with a bonus 7x9 inch photo-book via Shutterfly, a $20 value. The photo-book is optional, they basically give you a coupon and you can use it if you like, or just ignore it if you don't.

The Canon G10 has some advantages over its replacement, the G11, it has more megapixels (yes, I know, it's against the grain), and it has a fixed in-place LCD display. Both are decision points by photographers, some prefer fixed LCDs because they are less prone to damage, and the megapixels, well, that's a big can of worms for another place and another time!

16gb Adata memory card for $30 (shipping included)

If you are looking for affordable memory cards that can hold lots and lots and lots of pictures and video, then you came to the right place!

One of the daily special deals of eBay is the 16gb AData SDHC memory card going for just $30 with free shipping and handling. This is offered by powerseller eCost.com. There are no rebates to submit!

Because this is a high profile eBay deal listing, the retailer would be committing suicide if they tried to cheat on the buyers and needless to say eBay would actually be furious at them because they wouldn't want to ruin the reputation of their popular daily deals feature! So, in other words, this is safer than your average eBay sale because it is a high-profile listing!

One Nikon 35mm f1.8 lens left at $230

If you want the Nikon 35mm f1.8 DX lens and can't wait for it to get to your local store at $200, there is one unit left at Norman Camera at Amazon available for $230 with free shipping and handling!

This is a DX lens so it is ideal for most of the DSLRs out there, except of course for the ones that are 35mm full frame like the Nikon D3X, D3, and D700. It has roughly the multiple of a 50mm lens, which is considered a normal lens in traditional pre-digital SLR photography.

Please keep in mind, this price is good right now! It will change at a later date.

Canon 50D body-only now for $1082

If you are looking for a serious DSLR that packs a punch, Amazon has a discount on the Canon 50D, you can get it for $1082 with free shipping and handling. This is the body only kit, there is no lens included. Generally this is a good idea for mid-range DSLRs, because you want to pick a lens that is a good match for your needs, and it is at the mid-range or above tier.

Getting a basic lens for an entry-level DSLR is common practice, but when you advance to the more advanced DSLRs, a better lens will help you make the most out of your new investment.

This is an eight megapixel camera, which is a reasonable amount, assuming you are not planning to make big prints or you like to heavily crop your images. The lens is a three-times optical zoom, which doesn't give you a lot of flexibility. And it has a 3-inch LCD, which will please users who like bigger screens. The battery however is a proprietary lithium-ion, although that may be a pro or a con depending on your preferences on batteries.

What can $60 get you these days?

Let's say you only want to spend $60 to get a digital camera, either for you, or for a friend or loved one. And let's say you already have SD memory cards and rechargeable AA batteries. And let's say you are not afraid of refurbished digital cameras. Refurbished by the manufacturer by the way. So what can you get?

One answer that we do have for you is the refurbished Nikon L11, a Coolpix model, that takes AA batteries and sells for $60 at Adorama. Again, keep in mind this is a recertified model by Nikon U.S.A. It is not a brand new-in-box!

It has a 2.4" LCD display, a typical three-times optical zoom lens, and a very humble six megapixels, which believe it or not is more than good enough for every day use, considering this is an entry-level point and shoot digital camera.

Panasonic ZS1 ships for $268 (silver color)

In adddition to the Samsung that was just mentioned, there's another new superzoom model in the same price-range that you may be interested in, it is the silver Panasonic ZS1, a 10-megapixel camera with a 25-250mm lens, with in-lens optical image stabilization, which is a good thing for cameras with a built-in lens. The camera has a 2.7" LCD display, and a number of other user-friendly features that make this camera fun to use.

The camera is offered for $268, with free shipping and handling by Amazon.com.

Minox DC 7022 (black) for $140

If you are a fan of the old Minox brand, and want to carry on the tradition with a Minox-branded camera, then you may be interested in this offer by Adorama, for $140 with free shipping and handling for the Minox DC7022, which is available in a black camera-body color.

The camera has a seven-megapixel sensor, with a four-times optical zoom lens, but a three-inch display which is nice to have since it does not have the traditional optical viewfinder which is disappearing from more and more digital cameras these days.

This is a hard to find camera in the US market, so if you have the hots for it, this may be a good time to get it, because unlike most of the mass-market cameras, there are no guarantees or predictability as to its availability on an on-going basis.

Hitachi CP-X205 multimedia projector for $650

This has a 12-megapixel sensor, and a four-times optical zoom lens. Another plus is that the lens starts at around 28mm (in 35mm equivalent terms), so you can use it for larger group shots or interiors, or landscapes or other classic wide-angle subjects. However, please keep in mind that this is not the same as a 35mm full frame lens that starts at 28mm, but it has the equivalent field of view crop. Or something along those lines.

Weekly camera specials at Staples (May 17 to 23)

A new week, a new weekly ad from Staples and the other remaining retailers! We start with the Nikon Coolpix L100, a mid-size compact superzoom model, powered by the easy to find AA batteries going for exactly $250. It's not often that we see superzoom cameras featured in places like Staples. Perhaps they are finally catching up with the times?

We also have a DSLR in this circular, it's the Digital Rebel XS, going for $550. This is the current entry-level DSLR in the feared Canon EOS line-up!

The rest of the camera are affordable compacts, including the Sony Cybershot W220 for $160, the Nikon Coolpix S560 for $170, and the Kodak Z1485 for $170 (yikes, too many megapixels!).

Then we have some even more affordable models, like the Easyshare M863 and M1063, both going for $110 each. And at $140, you can get the M1033. So many numbers, how can one keep track of it all? Grrrrr!

And you can also pick up some memory cards, which are, obviously more expensive than the best online prices. These include a 4gb microSDHC card with an SD reader for $18, or a standard 4gb SDHC card for the same price. Good news for Sony fans, they can get a 4gb MemoryStick for $20. Not bad at all! And if you want an Ultra II Compact Flash, you pay $25. Not bad either. All of these are made (or at least marketed) by Sandisk.

Digital camera specials at Staples (May 10 to 16)

A new week is upon us and Staples has revealed their new specials for the week on their website and soon in the Sunday newspapers. They have some reasonable price, for a brick and mortar store of course, for some of the entry-level compact digital cameras.

We start with the Nikon L18 going for just $80. Yep, just $80! This is not bad, considering this is a AA-based and SD/SDHC-based camera, so you don't have to buy anything else for it if you already have rechargeables and those memory cards. Yes, it does have a 3x optical zoom lens!

Next, a lovely compact at a really nice price, the Canon SD1100is goes for just $130, an LiIon-based small little camera. And it even has a tiny little optical viewfinder. But keep in mind, that this OVF is more like tunnel-vision, don't expect it to be big and bright like the 35mm SLRs.

A few other cameras to note, the Easyshare C913 for $100, and the Kodak M1033 for $140. Not the lowest prices when compared to online though.

And we close with a 4gb PNY SDHC memory card going for $15, and that is without rebates! And you can also get an 8gb card from the same maker for $28. Yes, there is a better price per megapixel for the highest capacity.

Silver Olympus FE370 for $117

If you are an xD-user or a big fan of Olympus cameras, then you may want to take a look at the silver Olympus FE370, going for $117 with free shipping and handling at Buy.com.

Staples this week: Nikon L18 for $80, Kodak M1063 for $100

Sunday will likely be a busy day at Staples. In addition to the free after rebate chocolate (!), Casio KL-60L label maker and Avery inkjet mailing labels, they have some nice discounts on a couple of basic point and shoot digital cameras. You can get the blue Nikon Coolpix L18 for just $80. Yep, eighty bucks!

And you can get the red Kodak M1063 for just $100 or perhaps the Kodak C913 for $80, a basic AA-based digicam. There are no rebates for the cameras. What you pay is what you pay! And for $110, you can get the Easyshare M863. Yes, I know, it's an alphabet soup out there, you need a map to sort them all out. We hear you!

In addition to those two, they are also offering "combo value meals" on select digital cameras, where they add a memory card and camera case (or other accessories) for a really nice price.

One such case is the plum Nikon Coolpix S220 going for $130 on its own, or $140 bundled with a 2gb memory card and Case Logic camera case. Not bad for brick and mortar. Don't forget, Mother's day is just around the corner, and if Mom likes cameras, they will last a lot longer than flowers and chocolates, and they are certainly a lot more practical than jewelry!

Furthermore, the Sony Webbie HD cam-camcorder thingy is getting discounted as well, you can get it for $180 in-store!

But wait, there's more!
And in addition to that, there are various storage-related products on sale, including memory cards, external hard disks, blank DVDs, and USB flash drives. You have to put all those images somewhere, and the more precious they are, the more backsups and different media types one should consider using to mitigate the risk of media obsolence or long-term troubles.

And last but not least, you can satisfy the accountant in you, you can get the PeachTree accounting software for FREE after a sizeable mail-in rebate. I believe the rebate is around $140. But you are getting free software, so if you have need it or want to give it a spin, it is worth a spin. Just make sure you save all the receipts and rebate submission information!

16gb Kingston SDHC (Class 4) for $36

Memory is nice. But with more megapixels, even in compact point-n-shoot digicams, we all need more memory. More memory please!

At the moment, the 16gb cards seem to be a good bang for the buck. Case in point, at Amazon, offered by Amazon.com itself, you can get the 16gb Kingston SDHC, a Class 4 card, for $35.57 with free shipping.

Please do note, that various sellers are selling at Amazon. If Amazon itself is not the spotlighted seller, just look for them in the list of featured sellers, in the top right side of your screen.

As with eBay, when buying from an Amazon seller you are not familiar with, and it is not one of the well-known and recognizable names, it is very prudent to do your due diligence, if you are indeed interesting in taking a chance.

And as always, don't forget that if the price is too good to be true...

The camera has an eight-megapixel sensor, with a three-times optical zoom lens, and a 2.7" LCD that Kodak claims is an indoor/outdoor display. The "IS" of course stands for image stabilization, and the camera takes the very common SD/SDHC memory cards and uses a lithium-ion battery.

Bling it! Sony W170 gold for $200

If you like bling-bling, you can get a gold-color (not made of gold) Sony W170 at Amazon.com, sold by J&R World. Free shipping is included. This is a 2008 model, and it has a 10-megapixel sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens, that starts at 28mm wide which is nice for group portraits, indoors, landscapes, etc. It has the usual features, such as face detection, super steady shot, smile shutter, 2.7" LCD, Lithium-Ion battery, and of course Memory Stick Pro Duo.

Panasonic 45-200mm f4-5.6 drops to around $300

If you have a Micro Four Thirds DSLR, there are currently only two lenses available, the kit lens which you got with the G1, or the Panasonic 45-200mm f4-5.6, which has been dropping in price little by little. The latest price is $300 if you buy by Beach Camera or Amazon, or $305 if you buy from Amazon.com actual. If you buy from Amazon actual, you can also get six months of no interest if you pay for it with the Amazon Store Card. See their website for all the details and terms for this particular promotion.

The lens is the equivalent of 90-400mm in terms of 35mm, since this is using a Four Thirds size sensor, which has a 2X multiplier factor when trying to get the focal length in 35mm terms.

Why get it in 35mm terms? Because this is what a lot of photographers can easily recognize, since most people have been using 35mm SLRs for years and years. The native lens focal lengths can create confuse among the average photographer, since there is 2X with Four Thirds, 1.7X with Foveon/Sigma, 1.6X with Canon and 1.5X with everybody else.

Kodak V1003 gray yours for $100

If you like Kodak cameras, and cameras with 1/1.8" sensors instead of the smaller 1/2.5" and 1/2.3", and you don't object to older digital cameras, then you might be interested in the Kodak V1003 offered by Adorama for $100 and with free shipping and handling. This is a gray body color camera, with 10-megapixels and a 3x optical zoom lens.

If you are not familiar, be sure to check the many reviews out there, all it takes is a google search for "Kodak V1003 review".

Pentax Optio Z10 yours for $95 or so

If you want to try a folded optics camera with a zoom lens, then you might be interested in the Pentax Optio Z10 offered at Amazon by two well-known third-sellers for under $100. The sellers offering it are Beach Camera for $95 and with free shipping, and Willoughby's for $98 with free shipping. Some other 3rd party sellers are also offering it for similar prices, but we are not familiar with them.

If you haven't heard of this camera before, be sure to check for reviews and user comments because it has its series of trade-offs and negatives. However, when evaluating a $300 camera people are more strict than when it comes to evaluating the same camera for $100.

Price is still king, and queen and princess too :-)

If you are looking for an affordable digital camera, with some style, but don't expect it to have DSLR-like image quality (obviously), then you might be interested in the Casio EX-Z80BK offered by J&R World for $100. This is an eight megapixel camera with a 3x optical zoom lens and a 2.6" widescreen LCD on the back. Camera specials at Staples (3/8 to 3/14)

The new weekly ad of Staples is posted online, and in it we find a couple of affordable digital cameras advertised. First one is the Olympus FE-360 offered for a mere $80. That's right, that is not a typo my friends. The price is indeed eighty dollars! This is of course a basic camera, but you are certainly getting your money's worth at $80 if you already have xD memory cards or you don't object to getting a couple of them to use with this camera. It has an eight megapixel sensor (1/2.5" size) with a 3x optical zoom lens, and a 2.5" LCD. And it has the popular consumer-friendly feature of face detection.

The other digital camera advertised is a red Kodak M1063, a camera that uses a ten megapixel sensor (1/2.3" size) with a 3x optical zoom lens, a 2.7" LCD and of course face detection. The price is $138 and it is while supplies last so don't sleep on it if you like it or if you have a Staples gift card to burn.

Surpringly, they only have two cameras, but they also memory on sale, highlighted by the 4gb Sandisk Ultra II selling for $15. Ultra II is a step above the "regular" cards and obviously sells at a premium over the regular cards. Also an Ultra II, is the Memory Stick Pro Duo they offer and as you may have guessed, it costs twice as much. Yep, twice as much! $30 for a 4gb card.

And those with CompactFlash memory can get the Sandisk 4gb Ultra II card for $20. Yes, CF has a slight premium over SD, it is a bigger card after all :-)

Last but not least, for the cellphone users, they have a 4gb microSDHC going for $13. Not bad either.

As memory card prices drop, the difference between online and brick-and-mortar is diminishing, especially if you are only buying one or two cards. Obvioulsy if you are buying in volume, you can still save a lot more by buying online.

Pink Casio EX-Z9 for $107

If you love stylish looking pink digital cameras and you don't want to break the piggy-bank just to get one, then you might be interested in the pink Casio Ex-Z9 offered by J&R World on Amazon for $100 plus $9 shipping and handling. Not bad eh?

This is a slightly older camera however, yet, for the price and the market segment, this is not necesarily a bad thing. It has eight megapixels which seems to be about right for what it is supposed to do. Do you really need 12-megapixels for a basic carry-around point and shoot camera? What are you going to do with the pictures? If you are planning to make big prints, you would need a more advanced digital camera to begin with!

Just don't fall into the trap of megapixel-horsepower madness!

Affordable monopod: Opteka MP100 for $20

If you are looking for an affordable, or even dispoable monopod for photography or video, then you might be interested in the Opteka MP100 monopod for $13 plus $7 shipping and handling from 47th Street Photo on Amazon.com. Pink Olympus FE-340 shipped for $106

If you love pink cameras, and have a soft spot for Olympus, and already have xD memory cards, then you might be interestedin the pink Olympus FE-340 for $100 plus $6 shipping from J&R World in the Amazon.com marketplace. This is of course a basic point and shoot camera, but the pink color makes it look more stylish than it would if it was just a plain old shiny-silver typical digicam.

Nice kit: Black Panasonic G1 with lens for $670

If you are looking to get started with interchangeable-lens cameras but don't want to get one of the big-iron DSLRs, then you might be interested in a compromise, the Panasonic G1 kit for $670 and with free shipping and handling from Amazon.com. If you are looking for an affordable hybrid camera-camcorder gadget, and you don't want to spend too much money, how about the Flip Video Ultra (30-minute) for $70 and with free shipping and handling from Amazon.com? So if you don't need HD-video, you can get this for one-third of the price!

Precision Design DSLR300 Universal High Power Auto Flash for $60

Pentax Optio M30 shipped for $90

It is fulfilled by Amazon and sold by Pavilion Electronics. In other words, Amazon will handle the transaction and the shipping of the camera, so you won't be dealing with the 3rd party seller, but rather with Amazon.com itself.

Samsung S73 shipped for $87

If you would like an older 7-megapixel digital camera with a AA-based battery and typical features (3x optical zoom, SD cards, etc), then you might be interested in the black Samsung S73/S730, sold & shipped by Amazon itself for the price of $86.48. Not sure why they didn't round-up or round-down the price, but $86 is not a bad price. Of course the $100 camera segment has become quite popular the last few months, a combination of the economic situation but also the waves and waves of digital camera models and the wild competition between the manufactuers but also competition from cameraphones and other gadgets.

Pentax Optio M30 yours for $90

You can get the Pentax Optio M30 for $90 and with free shipping at Amazon.com, offered by a 3rd party and fulfilled by Amazon.com itself. All apologies to Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and International orders, they do not qualify for the free shipping promotion :-(

Refurbished Nikon D40X body only for a mere $275

Fuji S9000 shipped for $369

Beach Camera on Amazon is offering the Fuji S9000 for $369 and with free shipping. This is Fuji's older superzoom prosumer digital camera with a 1/1.6" sensor with a modest nine megapixels and a 10.7x optical zoom lens, which has the 35mm equivalent focal range of 28mm to 300mm, which covers wide angle and at the same time has some telephoto range. Obviously such a camera has its trade-offs when you compare it with a digital SLR, so your mileage may vary depending on your needs, preferences and expectations.

Pink Olympus Stylus 840 shipped for $135

Pentax Optio Z10 for just $100

The current economic environment makes cameras like the Pentax Optio Z10 a good deal as it is offered for $100 and with free shipping by Buy.com. No rebates! This is brand-new and sold and shipped by Buy.com itself, not any of the other sellers that are also offering products in their marketplace.

This is a folded optics camera, so don't expect the lens to behave like a 50mm f1.4 full frame lens to say the least. It has an 8mp sensor with a 7x optical zoom lens and a 2.5" LCD display and of course SD/SDHC and a LiIon battery.

Olympus E420 with 25mm pancake shipped for under $530

A great DSLR starter kit into Four Thirds, or a great DSLR kit for those who want a really small DSLR with a pancake lens is the Olympus E420 with the 25mm pancake lens offered by Amazon for $527 and with free shipping and handling. This is not bad! Please note that because this is a Four Thirds lens, the 35mm-equivalent of the lens is that of 50mm (multiply by two for 4/3rds), so essentially you are getting a "normal pancake". If that makes sense :-)

As you can see from the picture below, both the lens and the camera have a small footprint! One minus is that this camera does not have sensor-shift stabilization, so please keep that in mind as well.

Olympus FE20 shipped for $90

The Olympus FE20 is an entry-level point and shoot Olympus digital camera using an 8mp 1/2.5" sensor and a typical three times optical zoom lens. And the best part, you can have it for $90 at Amazon, with free shipping. Currently the best price at Amazon is offered by Adorama. Please note that this camera, like most Olympus P&S cameras, is using xD memory cards, and does not take SD/SDHC/MMC memory cards. So if you don't have any xD memory cards, then you have to factor in the additional cost of those cards to your purchase.

Slik SPRINT PRO Travel Tripod with Ball Head

If you are looking for a tripod from a recognizable brand name, how about the Slik Sprint Pro travel tripod with ball-head, offered by Adorama at Amazon.com for the reasonable price of $70 and without any shipping or handling fees. Not bad!

This is quite lightweight, at just under two pounds, but it expands up to 64 inches and can handle cameras up to 4.5 pounds heavy.

You can even unscrew the center column, which means you can have the camera as close as 6.4 inches to the ground. Needless to say, those who love to take close-up/macro photos may find this feature VERY helpful.

And remember, you are paying $70 for this puppy!

Starter DSLR Idea: Olympus E420 kit for around $400

If you are interested in taking the jump to DSLRs, but don't want to get a big DSLR and don't already have a heavy investment in lenses, one interesting starting point may be the Olympus E420 with its kit lens, going for around $400 by reputable 3rd party sellers at Amazon.com. This camera does not have image stabilization, but it is a relatively small DSLR compared to your typical DSLR. This is a less intimidating DSLR, thus a good starting point, since its size is closer to compacts than most of the other models out there.
