Starter DSLR Idea: Olympus E420 kit for around $400

If you are interested in taking the jump to DSLRs, but don't want to get a big DSLR and don't already have a heavy investment in lenses, one interesting starting point may be the Olympus E420 with its kit lens, going for around $400 by reputable 3rd party sellers at Amazon.com. This camera does not have image stabilization, but it is a relatively small DSLR compared to your typical DSLR. This is a less intimidating DSLR, thus a good starting point, since its size is closer to compacts than most of the other models out there.

Cheapest 35mm full frame DSLR: Canon 5D for $2000

If you must have a 35mm full frame DSLR, and if you must buy a brand-new-in-box model, then the lowest price available at the moment (and in the foresable future) is the original Canon 5D DSLR, offered by a number of reputable sellers at Amazon for $2000 and with free shipping and handling. This is of course is a three year old DSLR, and it's not as "cool" as the Canon 5D Mark II or megapixel-heavy as the Sony Alpha A900 or ISO-savvy as the Nikon D700. But it costs less than all of the above!

16gb Dane-Elec SDHC memory card under $30

Buy.com is offering the 16gb Dane-Elec SDHC memory card for $29.69 and with free budget shipping. This is a Class 4 card, so if you are a speed-demon you may want to avoid it.

Since we are on the topic of memory cards, Buy.com is also offering the 2gb Sandisk Memory Stick Pro Duo for $8 and with free budget shipping.

Both prices are valid until January 24, 2009, which happens to be Saturday!

$100 camera deal: Kodak M863 (red)

If exactly $100 is what you want to spend on a digital camera, with free shipping and no other fees, then you may be interested in the red Kodak M863 offered by Amazon.com itself for exactly $100.

The camera has an 8-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom lens, 2.7" LCD, LiIon battery and of course face detection. Face detection was the feature du jour in 2008 and it is here to stay, unlike wireless which has been trying to make inroads but so far, not-so-much.

GE E850 compact digital camera with 5x zoom for $105

Tigerdirect.com is offering the 5X optical zoom GE E850 for $100 plus $5 shipping via Amazon.com. This is a slightly older camera, with a 3" LCD, SD/SDHC support, a LiIon battery, and a lens that actually starts at 28mm wide. This is perhaps the cheapest wide-angle digital camera out there!

Another nice thing about it is that it has an 8-megapixel 1/2.5" sensor, which seems like a reasonable number of megapixels for this type of a camera. More megapixels, especially for cameras with smaller sensors, are definitely not always better. It's not just that the image quality is affected by smaller noisier pixels, it's also that you (and your camera and hardware) has to deal with a whole lot more data. Unless of course you make giant prints or you are a heavy cropped, in which case you are probably looking for more advanced digital cameras anyway.

As always, if you are not familiar with a specific digital camera, no matter how good the price may be, be sure to check the interwebs for reviews. Google is your new best friend for this task!

Panasonic TZ50 silver for $307

If you love the Panasonic TZ5 and you wish it had "wireless support", then you may want to take a look at the silver Panasonic TZ50. It is the TZ5 with wireless features. Current price is $307 and with free shipping, sold & shipped by Amazon.com.

But also keep in mind that the Panasonic product lifecycle means that a TZ5 replacement is likely to come out this spring (2009). Of course this does not necessarily mean there will also be a new wireless model.

We've seen different manufacturers try their hand at wireless cameras, but none of them seems to be making a dent, so there are no guarantees that there will be regular replacements, the same way "regular" cameras get replaced every year or every 6-9 months.

Case in point, Sony's new wireless G3 came 1.5+ years after their first model, the DSC-G1.

Hot pre-order: Sony Cybershot W220

Olympus Stylus 850SW for $210 now

Another Olympus, this time a compact point and shoot with some "magic powers" - it is waterproof and shockproof, it can resist the elements more than your average camera. It is part of the "SW" series of Stylus cameras.

On special is the yellow Olympus 850SW for $210 with free shipping by Adorama on Amazon.com.

This camera has an 8-megapixel sensor and a 3x optical zoom lens along with a 2.5" LCD. Please keep in mind that like all Olympus compacts, it does NOT take SD/SDHC or MMC memory cards. You have to use the proprietory xD memory cards which cost more and are not as frequently used by others and other devices. But if you need its special features, then the memory card format is a lower priority.

Affordable lens: Olympus 40-150mm for $120

Adorama on Amazon is offering the Olympus 40-150mm f4-5.6 lens for $120 plus $10 shipping. This is a Four Thirds lens obviously and it is targeting Four Thirds user who are looking for a very affordable zoom lens.

Samsung NV24hd down to $190 with free S&H

J&R world on Amazon is offering the Samsung NV24hd for $190 and with free S&H. This is a stylish compact from Samsung that starts at 24mm wide, something rather rare among compact point and shoot cameras. This camera (just like most cameras) has its issues, but as the price drops, the issues become less of a showstopper and more of a temptation :)

$100 camera for you: Panasonic LZ6K

Ritz Camera on Amazon is offering the Panasonic LZ6K for $99 and with free shipping. This is an older camera with a 7-megapixel sensor and a 6x MegaOIS zoom lens. If you hate the new 10mp and 12mp 1/2.33" sensors, this might be worth a look. It's follow-up, the LZ8, got high marks in the dpreview compact-cameras group test.

Nikon D60, body only, yours for $453

A rather hard to find configuration, a body-only configuration of the Nikon D60 DSLR can be had for about $453 (shipped) by Cameta Cameras on Amazon. This is not a bad price - this is a 10-megapixel APS-C (DX) DSLR that takes Nikon mount lenses.

If you have older lenses, please keep in mind that this DSLR requires the lenses to do the auto-focusing.

Olympus E520 body only just $439

This is perhaps one of the best deals for dollar in terms of DSLRs! You can have the body only of the Olympus E520 for $439 and with free shipping at Amazon.com. This is sold and shipped by Amazon.com itself. This DSLR, unlike the E420 and E410, and just like the E510, it has sensor-shift image stabilization. It takes Four Thirds lenses and if you want to use OM lenses with limited functionality, you would need a separate adapter.
