What can $60 get you these days?

Let's say you only want to spend $60 to get a digital camera, either for you, or for a friend or loved one. And let's say you already have SD memory cards and rechargeable AA batteries. And let's say you are not afraid of refurbished digital cameras. Refurbished by the manufacturer by the way. So what can you get?

One answer that we do have for you is the refurbished Nikon L11, a Coolpix model, that takes AA batteries and sells for $60 at Adorama. Again, keep in mind this is a recertified model by Nikon U.S.A. It is not a brand new-in-box!

It has a 2.4" LCD display, a typical three-times optical zoom lens, and a very humble six megapixels, which believe it or not is more than good enough for every day use, considering this is an entry-level point and shoot digital camera.

Panasonic ZS1 ships for $268 (silver color)

In adddition to the Samsung that was just mentioned, there's another new superzoom model in the same price-range that you may be interested in, it is the silver Panasonic ZS1, a 10-megapixel camera with a 25-250mm lens, with in-lens optical image stabilization, which is a good thing for cameras with a built-in lens. The camera has a 2.7" LCD display, and a number of other user-friendly features that make this camera fun to use.

The camera is offered for $268, with free shipping and handling by Amazon.com.

There is one review of this camera posted so far, at the technology aggregator site InfoSyncWorld.

White GE A830 digital camera for $60

CompUSA.com is having a special on the GE A830 digital camera for $60. This is the white body color.

This is obviously a basic P&S camera, with an eight-megapixel sensor, and a three-times optical zooom lens. The display is a standard 2.5" LCD. It takes the very easy to find AA batteries and the very common SD/SDHC/MMC memory cards.

Minox DC 7022 (black) for $140

If you are a fan of the old Minox brand, and want to carry on the tradition with a Minox-branded camera, then you may be interested in this offer by Adorama, for $140 with free shipping and handling for the Minox DC7022, which is available in a black camera-body color.

The camera has a seven-megapixel sensor, with a four-times optical zoom lens, but a three-inch display which is nice to have since it does not have the traditional optical viewfinder which is disappearing from more and more digital cameras these days.

This is a hard to find camera in the US market, so if you have the hots for it, this may be a good time to get it, because unlike most of the mass-market cameras, there are no guarantees or predictability as to its availability on an on-going basis.

Hitachi CP-X205 multimedia projector for $650

It uses the KLIC-7004 battery.

Joby professional SLR gorillapod for $85

You may have seen the small cutesy Gorilla mini-tripods in many places, but you may have not noticed that there is also a professional-caliber Joby GorillaPod Pro! It is currently offered by Adorama for $85 plus shipping. The S&H depends on your zipcode, so in theory, the further away you are from New York, the higher the S&H price will be. If you want a more advanced camera than the E-series, with a Lithium-Ion battery instead, then you may want to take a look at the Pentax Optio P70 offered with free shipping, also by Adorama, for $160. This has a 12-megapixel sensor, and a four-times optical zoom lens. Another plus is that the lens starts at around 28mm (in 35mm equivalent terms), so you can use it for larger group shots or interiors, or landscapes or other classic wide-angle subjects. However, please keep in mind that this is not the same as a 35mm full frame lens that starts at 28mm, but it has the equivalent field of view crop. Or something along those lines.

Both of these are 2009 digital camera models.

Weekly camera specials at Staples (May 17 to 23)

A new week, a new weekly ad from Staples and the other remaining retailers! We start with the Nikon Coolpix L100, a mid-size compact superzoom model, powered by the easy to find AA batteries going for exactly $250. It's not often that we see superzoom cameras featured in places like Staples. Perhaps they are finally catching up with the times?

We also have a DSLR in this circular, it's the Digital Rebel XS, going for $550. This is the current entry-level DSLR in the feared Canon EOS line-up!

The rest of the camera are affordable compacts, including the Sony Cybershot W220 for $160, the Nikon Coolpix S560 for $170, and the Kodak Z1485 for $170 (yikes, too many megapixels!).

Then we have some even more affordable models, like the Easyshare M863 and M1063, both going for $110 each. And at $140, you can get the M1033. So many numbers, how can one keep track of it all? Grrrrr!

And you can also pick up some memory cards, which are, obviously more expensive than the best online prices. These include a 4gb microSDHC card with an SD reader for $18, or a standard 4gb SDHC card for the same price. Good news for Sony fans, they can get a 4gb MemoryStick for $20. Not bad at all! And if you want an Ultra II Compact Flash, you pay $25. Not bad either. All of these are made (or at least marketed) by Sandisk.

Digital camera specials at Staples (May 10 to 16)

A new week is upon us and Staples has revealed their new specials for the week on their website and soon in the Sunday newspapers. They have some reasonable price, for a brick and mortar store of course, for some of the entry-level compact digital cameras.

We start with the Nikon L18 going for just $80. Yep, just $80! This is not bad, considering this is a AA-based and SD/SDHC-based camera, so you don't have to buy anything else for it if you already have rechargeables and those memory cards. Yes, it does have a 3x optical zoom lens!

Next, a lovely compact at a really nice price, the Canon SD1100is goes for just $130, an LiIon-based small little camera. And it even has a tiny little optical viewfinder. But keep in mind, that this OVF is more like tunnel-vision, don't expect it to be big and bright like the 35mm SLRs.

A few other cameras to note, the Easyshare C913 for $100, and the Kodak M1033 for $140. Not the lowest prices when compared to online though.

And we close with a 4gb PNY SDHC memory card going for $15, and that is without rebates! And you can also get an 8gb card from the same maker for $28. Yes, there is a better price per megapixel for the highest capacity.

If you are an xD-user or a big fan of Olympus cameras, then you may want to take a look at the silver Olympus FE370, going for $117 with free shipping and handling at Buy.com.

Pentax Optio E60 for just $90

Staples this week: Nikon L18 for $80, Kodak M1063 for $100

Sunday will likely be a busy day at Staples. In addition to the free after rebate chocolate (!), Casio KL-60L label maker and Avery inkjet mailing labels, they have some nice discounts on a couple of basic point and shoot digital cameras. You can get the blue Nikon Coolpix L18 for just $80. Yep, eighty bucks!

And you can get the red Kodak M1063 for just $100 or perhaps the Kodak C913 for $80, a basic AA-based digicam. There are no rebates for the cameras. What you pay is what you pay! And for $110, you can get the Easyshare M863. Yes, I know, it's an alphabet soup out there, you need a map to sort them all out. We hear you!

In addition to those two, they are also offering "combo value meals" on select digital cameras, where they add a memory card and camera case (or other accessories) for a really nice price.

One such case is the plum Nikon Coolpix S220 going for $130 on its own, or $140 bundled with a 2gb memory card and Case Logic camera case. Not bad for brick and mortar. Don't forget, Mother's day is just around the corner, and if Mom likes cameras, they will last a lot longer than flowers and chocolates, and they are certainly a lot more practical than jewelry!

Furthermore, the Sony Webbie HD cam-camcorder thingy is getting discounted as well, you can get it for $180 in-store!

But wait, there's more!
And in addition to that, there are various storage-related products on sale, including memory cards, external hard disks, blank DVDs, and USB flash drives. You have to put all those images somewhere, and the more precious they are, the more backsups and different media types one should consider using to mitigate the risk of media obsolence or long-term troubles.

And last but not least, you can satisfy the accountant in you, you can get the PeachTree accounting software for FREE after a sizeable mail-in rebate. I believe the rebate is around $140. But you are getting free software, so if you have need it or want to give it a spin, it is worth a spin. Just make sure you save all the receipts and rebate submission information!

16gb Kingston SDHC (Class 4) for $36

Memory is nice. But with more megapixels, even in compact point-n-shoot digicams, we all need more memory. More memory please!

At the moment, the 16gb cards seem to be a good bang for the buck. Case in point, at Amazon, offered by Amazon.com itself, you can get the 16gb Kingston SDHC, a Class 4 card, for $35.57 with free shipping.

Please do note, that various sellers are selling at Amazon. If Amazon itself is not the spotlighted seller, just look for them in the list of featured sellers, in the top right side of your screen.

As with eBay, when buying from an Amazon seller you are not familiar with, and it is not one of the well-known and recognizable names, it is very prudent to do your due diligence, if you are indeed interesting in taking a chance.

And as always, don't forget that if the price is too good to be true...
